The Jersey Shore Catholic Worker is a new venture -- in the tradition of the Catholic Worker movement, started in 1933 in NYC by Peter Maurin (1877-1949) and Dorothy Day (1897-1980). [For additional information about the Catholic Worker movement, go to www.catholicworker.org]. Hi! My name is Pam. Years ago I lived and worked at a Catholic Worker house in another state and found it a tremendous, life-changing experience. There are Catholic Worker houses in nearly every State in the country and a few abroad, however essentially none in NJ. My faith and experience tells me that a CW house is much needed locally: to witness to simple Gospel living and to provide aid to the homeless with dignity and respect. Last year after much prayer and discussion I took a leap of faith and quit my job to start a Catholic Worker house in the Ocean/Monmouth area. At present I reach out to the homeless living in the woods, provide hospitality in my home to a homeless woman as the need arises and participate in a faith based homeless advocacy network. I also do outreach with groups, parishes and individuals, a newsletter, and meetings for the 'clarification of thought' to educate the public on topics of interest. I welcome folks to join me -- by making sandwiches to bring to the homeless and/or exploring other ways to build this community of voluntary simplicity and ministry to the poor. I can be reached at jerseyshorecatholicworker@yahoo.com .
